NEWS RELEASE
Oregon OSHA, 350 Winter St. NE, Room 430, Salem, Oregon 97301-3878States Industries earns SHARP certification
Oregon OSHA welcomes States Industries, Components division to the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) this month. SHARP provides an incentive for Oregon employers to work with their employees to find and correct hazards, develop and implement effective safety and health programs, and continuously improve. The ultimate goal of SHARP is to encourage employers to become self-sufficient in managing workplace safety and health issues. Currently, 70 employer locations in Oregon participate in SHARP, in addition to 77 facilities that have graduated from the program.
States Industries began operations in 1968. We provide beautiful and durable hardwood panel products to architects, designers and craftsmen, creating memorable interior environments and furnishings. From Ash to Zebrawood, the range of color patterns and texture represented in hardwoods and premium softwoods complements and enhances the character, as well as the function of every project. The States team is privileged to work with these woods every day, constructing the raw materials that bring our customer's design and ideas to life. Components Division is a vertical integrated value-added outsource provider of hardwood components for a wide range of customers from big box distributors to small individual cabinet shops. Our production processes provides for the customer a service that eliminates many of the labor-intensive steps thus improving productivity, lowering cost and reduces delivery times.
1 States Industries, Inc. believes that safeguarding the heath and welfare of our employees cannot be emphasized too greatly. It is the policy of this Company to provide and maintain a safe and healthful place of employment, to comply with all safety laws and regulations.
2 The success of our safety and accident prevention program and processes depends upon the full cooperation and support of all employees. We are asking that each employee abide by the safety rules and follow safe work practices to keep our operation free of accidents and insure the safety of all employees.
3 Our objective is a Safety and Health program that will reduce the number of injuries and illnesses to an absolute minimum, not merely in keeping with, but surpassing, the best experience of other operations similar to ours. Our goal is zero accidents and injuries. Over the last four to five years our Safety culture at States Components has developed to a level that allows us to be recognized as the latest OSHA SHARP facility. This has been a 21/2 year partnership with OSHA and States Components to achieve this status. This is yet another vital tool in our tool box helping us to become a world class manufacturing facility. This along with our Lean Manufacturing ability has helped us to reduce cost and send our employee's home in the same condition as they arrived.
While we are proud of this accomplishment, we are not done. We will continue our partnership and look for new ways to improve our processes both in safety and production.
Participation in SHARP doesn't eliminate regulatory enforcement, although SHARP participants do receive a limited exemption from programmed inspections. Employees retain all workplace safety and health rights contained in the Oregon Safe Employment Act. Oregon employers that have been in business for more than one year are eligible to apply for SHARP regardless of size or type of business.
