Panels
In addition to the many specialty and proprietary panel products
supplied by States Industries, we manufacture a full line of standard
hardwood plywood products as specified by ANSI/HPVA HP-1-2000.
Products
These includes all domestic and most import species of veneer laminated
to veneer, particleboard or MDF substrates. These "stock panels"
are typically 48" X 96", but may also be constructed in
120" , 72" and 84" lengths, and can of course be
cut to any dimension by our component division. Thicknesses range
from 5/32" through 1-1/4" for veneer core products and
5/32 through 1-1/16" in particleboard or MDF substrates.
Veneer Species
Most stock panels are Maple, Birch or Red Oak. Cherry and Hickory
are also popular and we frequently manufacture vertical grained
Fir, Aromatic Cedar, Pine, White Oak, Ash and Walnut. Mahogany is
the most popular import face specie, while Anegre, Sapele, Meranti
and European Steamed Beech are less common. Teak, Sycamore, Hackberry
are unusual, but we occasionally fulfill orders for them.
Cutting Methods
The appearance of veneer is influenced greatly by how it is cut
from the log. Most face veneers are either rotary peeled or sliced,
though there are several other methods. Rotary cut veneers produce
a broad flat grain pattern in most woods, while sliced veneers generally
produce tighter grain and cathedral patterns.
Grades
Decorative veneer grades specific to each specie are standardized
by the Hardwood Plywood and Veneer Association (www.hpva.org)
under a voluntary standard, ANSI/HPVA-1-2000. This standard prescribes
the tolerances for color variation, flitch matching, natural and
manufactured characteristics for AA, A, B, C, D, and E grades of
face veneer as well as four grades of back veneers.
Substrates
Stock panels are generally either particleboard, MDF or veneer core.
Veneer core grades are also covered by ANSI/HPVA-1-2000, and are
designated J,K,L or M. Particleboard is available in a range of
densities made from a variety of wood species. MDF, or Medium Density
Fiberboard is also available in different densities made from various
feed stocks including most recently panels made from wheat straw.
Each of these substrates has advantages and disadvantages for a
given application and since all States products are made to order,
it is worth consulting with your supplier to insure you select the
appropriate construction.
Adhesives
The predominate adhesive used throughout the hardwood plywood industry
is interior type II, urea formaldehyde. Exterior type I adhesives
are also available. The release of formaldehyde from finished panel
products is regulated by the department of Housing and Urban Development
to be less than .3ppm in large chamber testing. States submits panels
for testing every week.
Other adhesives, including Melamines, Phenolics and
PVA based materials are available, though each has drawbacks. New
adhesive formulations are being brought to market and States Industries
continues to pursue viable alternatives to existing technologies.
Flame Spread Ratings
Standard hardwood plywood products manufactured by States Industries
carry a class "C" fire rating, ASTM e-84-81a, 76 to 200.
Class "A" rating panels are available with
special particleboard or MDF substrates.
